by Hiroto H. For many years, humans have dominated the world. We were the ones who invented things that we use in our everyday lives. But now things are changing. Can artificial intelligence take over our industrial society? It has been said in 2019 that by the year 2030, robots and AI could take over 20,000,000 human jobs, and that more than 1.5 million jobs would have been lost to robots in just the United States. In China, that number was expected to exceed 11 million. Across EU member countries, almost 2 million people would lose out on employment because of automation, the report said. Factory labor costs around the world have been skyrocketing, and most factory workers don’t want to keep gathering to work everyday. In the world’s biggest and cheapest manufacturing country, China, more than 40% of the jobs could be replaced. According to a new study from Oxford Economics, within the next 11 years there could be 14 million robots put to work in China alone. But it’s not just factories either. There are plenty of jobs available for robots to completely take over, even jobs related to human care. The Covid-19 era has changed the economic world since it began in early February, and we humans needed to think of better ways to use technology. Countries like Germany and South Korea have high factory-automation levels while keeping unemployment low. Different countries’ factories have been saying that they need to keep productivity stable, and automation would keep it steady. In Germany, deploying robots led to an increase of gross domestic product per capita of 0.5% over 10 years. The coronavirus pandemic could reduce working hours by 6.7%. Researchers have also acknowledged the drawbacks that were to happen simultaneously. “As a result of robotization, tens of millions of jobs will be lost, especially in poorer local economies that rely on lower-skilled workers. This will therefore translate to an increase in income inequality,” the study’s authors said. Robots could take over 47% of our jobs, but is it a benefit, or a detriment? What do you think?
